Ukraine’s national unity charter declares Ukrainian only state language

Kiev, Ukraine (Itar-Tass): Ukraine’s new Universal, or the national unity charter, which President Viktor Yushchenko and leaders of four parliamentary factions signed Thursday afternoon, envisions the use of Ukrainian as the only state language and the language for official communications in all spheres of social and public life. However, the Universal also guarantees the right to use freely the Russian language and other languages as specified by the Constitution and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
